Nissan's journey in China commenced much earlier than the new millennium. The brand began engaging itself in the Chinese automotive industry as early as 1973. Nissan's significant growth in China took place during the 1990s, with the establishment of a joint venture that created the foundation for its operations in China.
Early Growth and Development
The early years of Nissan's presence in China were focused on growth and development. By leveraging local production capabilities and understanding the Chinese consumer market, Nissan quickly expanded its product lineup and established a strong dealer network.
Sales Performance and Market Presence
China’s car market has been characterized by Nissan’s high sales. For example, in 2023, Nissan achieved a sales volume of 793,800 units – passenger cars and light commercial vehicles combined. New information shows that the number of units sold by Nissan in January 2024 was 65,553,with Dongfeng Nissan accounting for 62,132 of these.
Future Commitments and Electric Vehicle Plans
To be successful in China, Nissan has made a promise of expanding its presence there through plans for launching various new energy vehicles. The company plans to introduce seven electric models into the Chinese market by 2026 and aims at having 80% of its total sales be electric cars by 2030.
Nissan’s presence in China has grown from its entry into the country’s market back in 70s to today where it has become one of key players in automotive industry. With such strong figures and clear vision towards future with an ambitious EV strategy, Nissan continues strengthening its foothold within this nation.
