Biden Announces Investigation into Chinese Production of Essential Chips
On December 23, the Biden administration announced that it will initiate an investigation into essential chips (also known as traditional or mature node semiconductors, widely used in automobiles) manufactured in China. These semiconductors are crucial in the automotive industry. The objective of the investigation is to determine if China's actions regarding these semiconductors are "unreasonable" or "discriminatory," potentially imposing burdens on U.S. trade. Should this be the case, future U.S. administrations may consider implementing retaliatory measures, including imposing tariffs or restricting imports.
Xiaomi Officially Integrates VLM Visual Language Large Model
On December 23, Xiaomi Automobile revealed the rollout of the Xiaomi SU7 1.4.5 OTA update. This update introduces 13 new features and 26 experience optimizations. One of the significant additions is the integration of the VLM visual language large model, enhancing the system's ability to recognize complex road environments and special traffic rule areas. This advancement provides users with text and voice prompts for a safer driving experience. Furthermore, the charging map has been upgraded, with collaborative efforts on charging and energy networks established with NIO, XPeng, and Li Auto.
GAC Honda's New Energy Factory Begins Production, with an Annual Capacity of 120,000 Vehicles
On the same day, GAC Honda's new energy factory in the development zone officially commenced production, with an annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles. According to plans, by 2027, Honda will have 10 pure electric models, including the e:N series released in 2022 and the new electric brand "Ye" series released in 2024; by 2035, the sales proportion of pure electric vehicles will reach 100%.
Global Light Vehicle Sales May Increase in 2025, While Production May Decrease
S&P Global Mobility estimates that in 2025, global light vehicle (including passenger cars, sports utility vehicles, and pickup trucks) sales will grow by 1.7% year-on-year to 89.6 million units, partly due to the continued improvement in supply chain stability; however, global light vehicle production may decrease by 0.4% year-on-year to 88.7 million units.
