A month ago, BYD's Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu foresaw China's monthly New Energy Vehicle (NEV) penetration exceeding 50 percent within the year. Now, he anticipates this milestone to be reached within the next three months.

Speaking at the China EV 100 Forum in Beijing, Wang revealed that the NEV penetration rate had already surpassed 48.2 percent the previous week. With this trajectory, he estimates that the 50 percent threshold could be crossed in the upcoming three months, possibly even sooner.

Highlighting the rapid growth of NEVs in China, Wang emphasized that NEVs, including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), are poised to dominate the market. Last year, China saw NEV sales exceeding 7.88 million units, representing over 35 percent penetration.

Acknowledging the increasing competition and the need for industry players to adapt, Wang stressed the importance of scale and brand advantage in the NEV sector. As China's automotive industry undergoes structural adjustments, the NEV market is experiencing a cycle of consolidation, requiring companies to fortify their positions amidst tough competition.

With China's NEV penetration projected to rise, Wang envisions significant sales growth and increased exports, underscoring the need for robust R&D efforts and strategic positioning in this evolving landscape.
