BYD is preparing to boost the ante in the EV business with the release of its second-generation Blade battery by August 2024. The Blade battery is essentially a lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The name "Blade Battery" refers to its 'blade-like' physical construction, which resembles a collection of long, flat cells placed together.

This design increases space use by optimizing cell-to-pack architecture, resulting in increased energy density stored within the same volume. The first-generation Blade battery had already wowed the market with its safety features, longer range, longer lifespan, and less weight than more traditional designs.

The second-generation Blade battery intends to broaden these possibilities even more. It is expected to have an energy density of 190Wh/kg, which is significantly higher than the existing 150Wh/kg. This innovation is intended to allow electric vehicles to go more than 1000 kilometers on the CLTC cycle, a feat previously unheard of in LFP battery technology.

Furthermore, Wang Chuanfu, BYD's CEO, has stated that the new battery will be smaller and lighter while maintaining the same durability. Furthermore, by reducing power consumption per 100 kilometers, it will significantly improve both range and performance.
