WEY, Great Wall Motor’s premium NEV sub-brand, started presales for its revamped Gaoshan MPV. It is revealed by the company on its official Weibo account that, it received up to 7,848 orders within 24 hours.
The Gaoshan MPV debuts in three trims: the Gaoshan 8 priced at RMB 329,800 ($45,100), Gaoshan 9 at RMB 379,800 ($51,900), and an entry-level Gaoshan 7 variant with crowd-sourced pricing yet to be unveiled. The Gaoshan MPV comes standard across all trims with luxury configurations, including advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) and super smart cabin.
Tech Strategy: Over-Engineered Safety
The Gaoshan MPV adopts an “over-safety” strategy, making its passive safety measures outstanding:
- 81.96% ultra-high-strength steel in its body structure
- 2,000 MPa steel in A/B pillars
- Industry-first hot gas-expanded structural tubes for enhanced rigidity
- A 3,387mm side curtain airbag with six-second pressure retention
Thanks to all these, in a simulated dual-vehicle vertical side-impact test at 60 km/h, the Gaoshan MPV demonstrated zero cabin deformation, intact third-row survival space, and no electrical hazards.
L2+ ADAS
The Gaoshan’s L2+ autonomous system combines highway and urban Navigate-on-Pilot (NOA), offering lifetime free access to intelligent driving and smart cabin services. Core features include:
- Automated lane changes;
- Obstacle avoidance;
- Lane centering across complex road scenarios.
Hi4 PHEV Tech
The GWM strengthened its commitment to plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology, and rejected range extenders technologies on the event. The GWM’s Hi4 high-performance make it possible. Its Hi4 system delivers:
- 337 kW maximum power
- 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds
- WLTC fuel consumption of 7.15 L/100 km in hybrid mode (claiming a 0.9–1.0 L/100 km efficiency edge over range extenders on highways)
- A millisecond-level torque distribution with AWD system, making the PMV drive stable across all kind of road, including wet roads, sharp turns, and light off-road terrain.
As GWM’s premium NEV arm, WEY sold over 54,000 units in 2024, with Gaoshan MPV struggled with under 5,000 annual deliveries. Will this new model make any difference forthe brand in such a competitive MPV market in China? We will see.
