BYD, a well-known company in China's new-energy vehicle market, has officially named its first new-energy pickup truck, the BYD Shark. The vehicle, which runs on BYD's internally built DMO super hybrid off-road platform, represents a promising new direction for the global automobile industry. The platform was announced with the Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand in 2023, indicating BYD's intention to enter the off-road vehicle industry. Built for global distribution, the BYD Shark represents a disruptive transformation in the horizon.

An Eye-catching Exterior

Spotting the "Shark" in the wild requires no shark watcher. Despite the camouflage used in the original promotional videos, the BYD Shark has a striking silhouette. The shape resembles that of the Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand's Bao 5, which has similar headlamps and overall body contour. The design inspiration is mainly based on its namesake sea predator, resulting in an imposing, sleek, and cutting-edge appearance that does not shy away from asserting its presence.

Impressive Specifications: A Deeper Dive

The BYD Shark's cabin design is similar to the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5, mirroring its exterior. It has a 12.3-inch LCD screen and a 15.6-inch center control touch panel, which provide an interactive and intuitive driving experience. The control switch and gear knob designs are inspired by aviation cockpits, emphasizing the vehicle's utilitarian nature.

The Shark has a hybrid powertrain that may be configured with a 1.5T or 2.0T vertical engine. The Shark, equipped with a 31.8 kWh blade battery, has a range of approximately 125 kilometers in pure electric mode (according to CLTC requirements). Furthermore, with a completely charged battery and the best fuel circumstances, the car has a remarkable range of up to 1200 kilometers.
