CATL Launches World's First Ultra-Safe Bedrock EV Chassis

CATL, world’s leading EV battery producer from China, launched its first EV chassis, with ultra safe features and innovative technology. The chassis is named “CATL Bedrock Chassis”, and “磐石” in Chinese, which means big and thick stones implementing stability and solidity.

Revolutionary Safety Features

On Tuesday, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) held a Bedrock Chassis Launch Press Conference in Shanghai. By employing the Cell to Chassis technology (which means the Chassis integrates the battery cells into the chassis), the Bedrock Chassis can absorb 85% of the collision energy (to be clear, that of other traditional chassis is about 60%), making it to be the world’s first ultra-safe skateboard chassis.

The Chassis is solid. By adopting the three-dimensional biomimetic turtle shell structure, and an aircraft carrier-style arrestor structure, the Chassis can reduce the chassis intrusion and minimize the deformation of the energy cabin. The Cassis also uses 2000MPa submarine-grade hot-formed steel and 600MPa aerospace-grade aluminum alloy to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Advanced Battery Safety

The battery is safe. The Chassis features several battery safety technologies, such as high-safety battery cell design, NP technology, the usage of the highly tough energy-absorbing insulating film, and etc. Thus the battery will remain safe without catching fire or exploding, when undergoing extremely rigorous tests, including high speed of 60km/h sled impact, or bending it into 90°, or sawing it violently to expose the cross-section.

Versatile and Adaptable Design

Additionally, the Chassis is able to adapt to different models and scenarios, thanks to its innovative standardized interface design. It has a rich set of Toolkits solutions, and is designed under an expandable hardware and software architecture.

In this way, CATL Bedrock Chassis will be able to shorten the R&D time of a mass-produced vehicle from 36 months to just 12-18 months.

Strategic Partnership with Avatr

Meanwhile, CATL and Avatr signed an agreement on the Bedrock Chassis, and Avatr will be the first automaker to use the innovative and ultra-safe chassis.
